Chasing Mavericks: More Terrifying Than Shark Week
Chasing Mavericks, a new surfing movie starring Gerard Butler and relative newcomer Jonny Weston, just issued its trailer. The movie follows Weston's Jay Moriarity, a boy who holds his breath until he passes out and trains for hours in hopes of surfing the Mavericks in Northern California. Many would rather take on a shark than try to tame or at least taste the terrifying Maverick waves. Gerard Butler was actually injured while surfing for the film.
Based on the true story, Chasing Mavericks details the friendship between Jay and his mentor Frosty Hesson as Jay tirelessly pursues the brutal and deadly waves. As Frosty says in the trailer for the movie, falling in the kind of waves Jay wants to surf is like falling into concrete at 50 miles per hour. It may be a pursuit of a dream, but the waves and adventure are often lethal. In 2001, the real Jay Moriarity tragically drown at 22 in a diving accident, passing away in the Indian Ocean. He is honored as a surfing legend. The film chronicles his journey and pursuit of a ride on a giant, and has the potential to be a giant itself. It comes out October 26, 2012. Check out the trailer here.
